Historic Peninsula Architectural Facade Design Guidelines

A comprehensive Architectural Facade Design Guideline was prepared for Istanbul's 1,600-hectare Historic Peninsula to guide new development within one of the world's most significant historic urban environments, ensuring that contemporary buildings contribute positively to the area's architectural character while respecting its heritage values, urban morphology and iconic skyline.

The study analysed urban character zones, historic building typologies, street patterns, architectural rhythms and visual relationships. These findings informed design principles for facade composition, massing, materials, window proportions, floor alignments, roof forms, colour palettes and ground-floor interfaces.

Rather than encouraging historical imitation, the guideline promotes context-sensitive contemporary architecture, providing clear architectural criteria and implementation guidance.
